About Me

My photo
Atlanta, GA, United States
My interest in sewing began when I was around 9 years old. I remember watching attentively while my mother made school clothes for my sisters and me. As soon as she discarded the scraps, I would begin making dolls clothes. From doll clothes, making a vest or a simple pair of slacks was an easy transition for me. By the time I was in 7th grade, I was taking sewing classes in school and making my own outfits. Along with my mother’s talent for designing and sewing, I picked up a lot of my creativity from both my maternal and paternal grandmothers. I have learned so much from my mothers before me and I continue to sew on a daily-basis creating my own designs, sewing from patterns, and crafting. My Husband and I have a huge art and artifact collection. Some of my creations will have various cultural artforms incorporated. I prefer to use not only materials and textiles from Africa, Mexico, and other parts of the world, but also use a combination of bio-degradable, recycled, and vintage textiles and products in my designs. Each handbag, accessory, and other creations may be similar in style but no two creations are alike.

A True Warrior

Ok, maybe I’m a little peculiar.  I’d like to think I’m an individual with a seventh eye.  That’s right…not six, but seven!  While browsing through one of my African art history books, I ran across various photos depicting men of status within their tribal village.  I was so intrigued by what I saw in the pictures that I decided to create dolls to place on mantels in our home.  The first doll pictured is my vision of an African warrior.  He is wearing an authentic passport mask from Africa that I glued to his face after making his head of Styrofoam and wire.  I constructed him of wire framing that I got in the jewelry crafting section at Michael’s.  I wrapped the wire with cotton batting purchased at Hancock Fabric Store.  His brown skin is made of chocolate brown scraps of fabric.  I can’t remember the name of the EBay Store where I purchased the raffia to make head and waist dressing.  His jewelry is recycled from a vintage piece I had found years ago. I haven’t mastered the art of making life-like limbs, but I took the time to give him a few fingers and toes!

My husband liked the doll so much that I gave to him.  It is now on display in his office.  A true warrior and conversation piece!

A Must Have

You’ve guessed it!  I’m still trying to get this whole blogging thing down.  Well first of all, having something to write about usually helps…that and having photos to upload.  So, who’s going to act as the camera person when there’s no one around but me?  Ok, so I’m over it.  Now back to the matter at hand.  I have been in desperate need of more working space.  So I went online shopping for a practical sewing table that would not take up too much space in my office that doubles as a craft and sewing center.  Nothing I ran across really touched me until  I somehow found this website called Anna Whites Furniture.  The website has tons of neat DIY projects and I found detailed instructions on how to build my own sewing and craft table.

 Take a look!
